DOZENS of firefighters are battling a blaze which started in hay bales – with residents urged to keep windows and doors closed.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene, in West Tytherley, at around 2.30pm this afternoon (August 9).
“More than 50 firefighters from across Hampshire attended the incident, working alongside crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading,” a spokesperson said.
“Local farmers have also been using agricultural machinery to create firebreaks around the affected area, supporting firefighters’ efforts to bring the fire under control.
“The fire is now surrounded, with crews damping down the affected area. Operations are now scaling down, although firefighters will remain at the scene to monitor the situation and ensure the fire does not escalate.”
They said some smoke may remain visible in the area as “the affected straw is allowed to burn out”.
“Local residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed while smoke remains in the area,” they added.
