Registration opens for ever-popular Walk for Wards

THOUSANDS of walkers are expected to descend on the Wilton Estate this summer as Salisbury Hospital’s charity, the Stars Appeal, brings back its flagship Walk for Wards event.

The popular sponsored walk takes place on Sunday, July 5 and invites people of all ages to step out in support of wards and departments – whether to say thank you for care received or to remember a loved one.

Participants can choose from four routes, ranging from family-friendly 3k and 5k walks to more demanding 10k and 15k options, with the longest route returning by popular demand.

Walkers are asked to register in advance and raise sponsorship for their chosen ward or department.

Dr Gail Ng, paediatric emergency medicine consultant at Salisbury Hospital and a Stars Appeal ambassador, said the charity’s impact is felt every day across the hospital.

She highlighted funding for major equipment such as MRI scanners, child-friendly facilities and practical comforts including Wi-Fi, phone charging points and emergency clothing packs.

“By taking part in Walk for Wards you will be helping the Stars Appeal to continue making a real difference to the care we are able to provide,” she said.

This year’s event aims to contribute towards the Stars Appeal’s £2 million fundraising target, supporting projects that benefit patients, families and staff across the hospital.

The charity’s president, the Earl of Pembroke, described Walk for Wards as “a fantastic day out for all ages” and encouraged the community to take part in the “extraordinary atmosphere” of the event, set against the backdrop of Wilton House.

The walk is held with the permission of Lord and Lady Pembroke and is sponsored by Salisbury Reds, with support from Wilton and Salisbury Rotary Clubs and other local organisations.

Salisbury Reds general manager Andrew Sherrington added: “We’re keen to help raise as much awareness as possible for this very worthy cause.

“Many of our team members have close links to the charity and this is a great chance for us to support its work.”

Entry is free and includes lunch as well as admission to the Wilton House gardens and the adventure playground.

Walkers must commit to minimum sponsorship of £20 or £50, depending on route, and register in advance at www.starsappeal.org
