Speeding epidemic exposed: 150 drivers in days

MORE than 150 drivers have been caught speeding across south Wiltshire in just a matter of days – many in 30mph zones where residents have long raised safety concerns.

New figures released by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon reveal the scale of the issue, with enforcement officers carrying out a series of targeted speed checks in hotspots including Salisbury, Harnham, Wilton and Tidworth.

In one of the most striking results, 46 drivers were caught speeding in just 45 minutes on Downton Road in Salisbury, with one motorist clocked at 47mph – well above the limit.

Nearby in Harnham, 22 drivers were recorded speeding on Coombe Road in a single session, while a follow-up check the next day caught a further 36 drivers breaking the limit.

Wilton also saw high numbers, with 24 motorists caught in just 25 minutes on The Avenue. The fastest there reached 47mph.

But it was in Tidworth where the highest speed was recorded.

On the A338 near Ashdown Terrace, one driver was caught travelling at 53mph in a 30mph zone – more than 20mph over the limit. That driver is now set to face court action.

Most offenders were offered speed awareness courses, while others received fixed penalty notices and points on their licences.

Speeding continues to be one of the most common concerns raised by residents across Wiltshire, particularly in built-up areas where pedestrians, cyclists and families are most at risk.

The OPCC said in a statement: “Road safety is a key feature of our Police and Crime Plan and we’ll continue supporting regular speed checks across Wiltshire and Swindon.”

Would appreciate a speed check on Salisbury rd Bulford. Going up the hill to Amesbury. They would have a field day.
