Dad rides 1,500 miles on tiny bike for hospice

A DETERMINED father-of-five is preparing to ride more than 1,500 miles across Britain on a tiny motorbike to say thank you to the hospice that cared for his mum in her final months.

Richard Minto, from Wilton, known to friends and family as Minty, will set off from Salisbury Hospice on May 24 on an epic six-day fundraising journey taking him to Loch Ness, through Wales and on to the Isle of Wight.

By his side for every mile will be ‘Banana Betty’; his much-loved 2019 Honda Monkey 125.

The challenge comes just months after Minty lost his mum Andrea, who died in February following a long battle with cancer.

He says the care his family received from Salisbury Hospice is something he will never forget.

“The palliative care team at Salisbury Hospice did an absolutely fantastic job with helping mum as much as they could over the past 6+ months,” he said.

“The hospice helped mum with her mobility and comfort, allowing her to remain independent for as long as possible.

“Mum made the decision to stay in the hospice as she had become so ill, and we knew it was near the end.

“The care that was given to mum when she needed it most was absolutely amazing and the support offered to our family showed a truly caring environment.”

Determined to give something back, Minty decided to combine fundraising with his love of motorbikes – a passion he says has also helped him through difficult times.

“In 2022 I was diagnosed with Bipolar type 2, and although I’d always liked bikes I’d gone over 20 years without one,” he said.

“The freedom I get from my bike is the perfect therapy for me, as it helps me shut the world out and focus on the road and my surroundings.

“It’s the best thing I have ever experienced; I am always smiling while riding my Monkey!

“After seeing the work of all the staff and volunteers I felt really inspired me to do this. The care and compassion given is something I will always remember.”
