City rallies behind new mayor Jenny Bolwell

RESIDENTS have been quick to welcome the city’s new mayor, with many praising Cllr Jenny Bolwell’s years of community work following her election at the weekend.

Saturday’s traditional mayor-making ceremony saw a colourful procession through the city centre before Cllr Bolwell was formally installed as Salisbury’s 765th mayor at St Thomas’s Church.

More than 150 guests attended, including civic leaders and visiting mayors from neighbouring towns.

But it was the reaction from local people afterwards that captured the mood.

“Very well deserved!!” wrote Rachel Louise on social media.

“This lady helped me through a very difficult time, she didn’t know me and had no obligation to do so, but she selflessly took time out of her day on many occasions to support me, I am forever grateful.”

Amber-lily Nicolle added: “Huge congratulations Jenny! I am so proud to know you will be our Mayor. Jenny is extremely caring and not blind to the troubles locals face.

“She has been an amazing advocate for many over the years and now I am excited to see how much more of an impact she can make.”

Others echoed the praise, with comments including: “Congratulations, Jenny, you do such wonderful work for our community,” from Lisa Mary, and “The people of Salisbury are lucky to have you,” from Ros Balouras.

Cllr Bolwell has chosen Salisbury Foodbank as her charity for the year.

She said: “I feel deeply honoured to be the 765th Mayor of Salisbury, not just because of the title, but because of what it represents: trust, community and the chance to give something back.”

She will be supported by her consort, Tom Corbin, while Cllr Victoria Charleston takes on the role of deputy mayor.

Salisbury MP John Glen MP also attended the ceremony and said: “I was pleased to attend the Annual Meeting of Salisbury City Council at St Thomas’s Church to witness the ‘election’ of the 765th Mayor of Salisbury – Cllr Jenny Bolwell.

“Jenny takes over from Cllr John Wells who has completed a year of devoted service.

“I wish Jenny well in her busy year ahead and hope this will be a fantastic experience for her and her family – a great honour.”
