RETAILERS are set to face test purchase operations as police launch a week-long crackdown to reduce knife crime and prevent weapons falling into the wrong hands.

The national campaign, called Sceptre, began today (May 18) and will see Wiltshire Police carrying out weapon sweeps, knife arch operations and undercover checks on businesses selling knives.

Police cadets will assist officers as part of the operation, which focuses heavily on responsible retailing and stopping underage sales.

Alongside enforcement, police are also rolling out a potentially life-saving new initiative; public bleed kits designed to help save lives in the critical moments after a serious injury.

The Wiltshire Police Bleed Kit Partnership launched this week with HeartSafe UK, NHS England South West and South Western Ambulance Service, will place emergency kits in communities across the county.

Superintendent Mike Vass said: “Knife crime has a devastating impact on victims, families and communities. Retailers can make a real difference by ensuring knives are sold safely and responsibly.

“Together, through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to public safety, we can reduce the risk and protect those most at risk of harm.

“We will continue to take robust action against those who carry knives, but enforcement alone is not enough.

“Responsible knife sales by retailers are essential in preventing these weapons from being misused. We are asking businesses to play their part by following the law and helping us stop knife crime at its source.”

The bleed kits contain specialist dressings, trauma bandages and tourniquets designed to help stem severe blood loss before paramedics arrive.

Supt Vass added: “The kits come with fundamental life-saving equipment and clear instructions to help provide emergency first aid for someone who is suffering significant blood loss prior to emergency services arriving on scene. They are available to the public 24/7.”
