A CAR used to dump rubbish illegally in Wiltshire has been put on public display before it is crushed in a bid to send a strong message to would-be fly-tippers.
The vehicle is currently parked outside County Hall in Trowbridge after being seized by Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police following a fly-tipping incident in Bulford.
Council CCTV captured the vehicle dumping plastic pipes on a public right of way on May 11.
The person responsible was later interviewed under caution and issued with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice, which has not been paid.
The driver also failed to prove ownership of the vehicle within the required 15-day period and told authorities they had no documentation.
As a result, the car has now been legally forfeited and will be crushed later this month.
Cabinet member for highways Cllr Martin Smith said: “We always attempt to reuse or recycle seized vehicles, but this one has done more than 215,000 miles and is not in a fit state to resell, so it will be crushed later this month as a clear warning to anyone thinking of fly-tipping in Wiltshire.
“This display is designed to act as a strong deterrent, highlighting that offenders risk not only fines but also potentially losing their vehicles.
“Let this be a clear warning – if you fly-tip in Wiltshire, we will find you and you will face the consequences.”
The council said fly-tipping costs taxpayers thousands of pounds every year and insists it will continue using CCTV, fines and vehicle seizures to tackle offenders.
