Warning on illegal metal detecting as historic sites come under threat

POLICE in Wiltshire are warning metal detectorists that action will be taken against anyone caught illegally searching protected historic sites.

The force said metal detecting can be an enjoyable hobby that has helped uncover important pieces of history, but only when it is carried out responsibly and with the landowner’s permission.

Officers are urging anyone planning to use a metal detector to avoid protected and scheduled monuments where detecting is illegal because of their historical importance.

PC Emily Thomas said: “Wiltshire is a county rich in heritage, and it’s important these assets are preserved for future generations.

“The majority of detectorists respect the law, seek permission and act responsibly. Unfortunately, there are a small number who choose to disregard the rules and come to our attention.

“We work closely with Historic England to raise awareness and protect our unique heritage. We will not hesitate to take action against anyone found breaking the law. Detecting on protected sites is completely unacceptable.”

Historic England has backed the warning, saying most hobbyists act responsibly but a small minority risk damaging irreplaceable archaeological sites.

Head of heritage crime strategy at Historic England Mark Harrison said: “The vast majority of metal detectorists follow the law and recognised codes of practice.

“Working alongside Wiltshire Police and forces across the country, we have developed the expertise and partnerships needed to identify and prosecute the small minority who cause damage to our shared cultural heritage.”

Police are reminding detectorists to always obtain permission from landowners, avoid protected sites and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, refill any holes, accurately record finds and report potential treasure discoveries to the local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days.

Anyone who witnesses illegal metal detecting or heritage crime is urged to report it to Wiltshire Police.
