Fly-tipping vehicle crushed in Wiltshire crackdown

A VEHICLE used to dump waste illegally in Wiltshire has been crushed by the council in a bid to deter fly-tippers.

The car was seized by Wiltshire Council, working with Wiltshire Police, after CCTV captured it being used to dump plastic pipes on a public right of way in Bulford on May 11.

Following an investigation, the person responsible was interviewed under caution and issued with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice, which has not been paid.

The driver also failed to provide proof of ownership within the required 15-day period and told investigators they had no documentation for the vehicle.

As a result, it was legally forfeited before being crushed.

Before its destruction, the vehicle was displayed outside County Hall in Trowbridge to highlight the consequences of fly-tipping.

Cabinet Member for Highways Cllr Martin Smith said: “This action is designed to send a strong message – offenders risk not only fines but also losing their vehicles.

“Fly-tipping is a selfish, criminal act that harms our communities and costs taxpayers thousands of pounds every year.

“We will not tolerate it and will continue to use every tool available – including CCTV, fines and vehicle seizures – to crack down on offenders.”

The council said the vehicle, which had covered more than 215,000 miles and was unsuitable for resale, has since been recycled, with the authority receiving the scrap value of its parts.
