Ferndown head groundsman retires after 42 years behind the mower!

THE man who has kept Ferndown’s King George’s Field looking resplendent for more than four decades has stood down from his mower.

Keith Wilcox took on the role of head groundsman for the King George’s Field Charity (KGV) in 1984, having previously worked for Hampshire County Council.

Now, after 42 years, he has retired amid tributes led by Ferndown Town Council, the sole trustee of the King George’s Field Charity.

A spokesperson praised Keith’s “extraordinary 42 years of dedicated service to the Charity and the local community”.

“During more than four decades at KGV, he has overseen the care and development of the grounds through countless changes, from evolving health and safety standards to major improvements across the site,” they said.

“Keith has been a constant presence throughout the years, earning the respect and friendship of colleagues, volunteers and visitors alike.”

Colleagues described him as “a trusted mentor, friend and consummate professional whose knowledge, dedication and good humour have left a lasting legacy”.

“Trustees and colleagues at KGV extend their sincere thanks to Keith for his outstanding service and wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement,” the spokesperson added.
