SHOCK and sadness have swept across Salisbury following news that one of the city’s oldest family-run businesses is set to close after nearly 120 years.

Customers have taken to social media to share memories and pay tribute to Southons of Salisbury, a long-standing furniture store on Catherine Street that has been part of the city’s retail landscape for generations.

“A big loss to the city centre,” said Salisbury city councillor Annie Riddle, echoing a sentiment shared widely online.

The family-run business, which dates back to 1907, has confirmed it will close its doors for good as its current owner steps into retirement.

Originally founded on the corner of Dews Road and Fisherton Street, Southons moved to Catherine Street in 1924, with the premises later expanded and modernised in the late 1960s.

Over more than a century, it became known for high-quality furniture and personal service.

Chris Southon, managing director, said the decision had not been easy.

“After nearly 120 years and the involvement of three generations of my family, this a very sad announcement to have to make,” he said.

“However, with no succession and the increasing commercial pressures under which we are now operating, we have reluctantly concluded that this is the right time to bring down the curtain on our illustrious history.”

The store has confirmed it will meet all obligations to staff, customers and suppliers, and will continue trading while stock is sold off in a closing down sale, which opens to the public on Friday, May 8.

“We are proud of our long and successful relationship with Salisbury and will continue to offer the best service to customers right to the very end,” Mr Southon added.

For many residents, the closure marks the end of an era.
