THE works of Purcell, Britten, Handel and more are set to reverberate through Salisbury Cathedral next year as part of upcoming candlelight concerts.
The series of intimate chamber concerts in the tranquil setting of the North Transept in the cathedral will open with Winter Words by Candlelight on January 17.
Highly acclaimed British tenor Ruairi Bowen and prize-winning accompanist William Vann will be performing Benjamin Britten’s Winter Words, a song cycle of Thomas Hardy’s poems exploring several themes including memory, nature and human experience.
Purcell by Candlelight on February 14 is the perfect romantic setting for lovers of early music as Edward Rimmer conducts a consort of eight singers through some of Henry Purcell’s most expressive and powerful religious music, accompanied by a small ensemble of period instruments.
World renowned pianist, academic and broadcaster David Owen Norris will perform Piano by Candlelight on March 14, a programme of music including composers such as Handel, Mendelssohn, Byrd, as well as his own compositions, all with connections to Salisbury.
The final concert of the series is the Wind Quartet by Candlelight on May 2, where the Mayflower Ensemble will celebrate composers who write high quality chamber music of all genres.
“A particular highlight will be Holst’s Quintet for wind and piano,” a Salisbury Cathedral spokesperson said.
Tickets for these concerts are now on sale, further information and ticketing details can be found at www.salisburycathedral.org.uk
