EARLY risers in Salisbury are being invited to experience one of nature’s most magical moments as a nature reserve launches its first community event of the year.
On Sunday, May 3, Broken Bridges Nature Reserve will host a special Dawn Chorus Discovery to mark International Dawn Chorus Day, offering people the chance to hear the countryside come alive at sunrise.
The early morning event, organised by Charley Miller alongside ranger Alex Rose, will give participants a guided introduction to the dawn chorus – the burst of birdsong that fills the air at first light and is widely considered one of nature’s most uplifting seasonal spectacles.
Starting from either the Bemerton or Harnham ends of the reserve, visitors will be guided through the tranquil landscape, learning to recognise different bird calls while discovering more about the wildlife that calls the area home.
Charley said: “We’re delighted to be launching our first event for the community.
“The dawn chorus is something really special, it’s a chance to slow down, listen, and connect with nature in a way that many people don’t often experience.”
The event is designed to be welcoming and accessible, whether you are a keen birdwatcher or simply looking for a peaceful start to the day.
Ranger Alex added: “This event is open to everyone you don’t need any prior knowledge. Whether you’re curious about birds or just want to enjoy a calm and inspiring start to your day, we’d love to welcome you.”
The Dawn Chorus Discovery also marks the beginning of a wider programme of events at the reserve, aimed at bringing the community closer to nature.
Chair of Broken Bridges Nature Reserve Jeremy Nettle said he was delighted that a programme of events ‘Nurturing Nature’ was now coming together and hoped that they would appeal to all ages.
With spring in full swing and wildlife at its most active, organisers hope the event will inspire more people to explore and appreciate one of Salisbury’s hidden natural gems.
