Dorset and Wiltshire firefighters mark 9/11 anniversary in Atlanta

A TRIO of firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire visited the US to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

The group, from the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS), joined hundreds of others from the US, UK and Ireland and around the world in Atlanta last weekend to take part in the Memorial Stair Climb.

More than 1,200 firefighters climbed 2,236 steps during the memorial event, the equivalent of 110 floors – the same height as the World Trade Center towers.

During the challenge, wearing full fire kit, participants endured temperatures as high as 37C, each carrying a lanyard bearing the image, name, and station/unit of one of the 343 firefighters who perished in New York during the 2001 terrorist attack.

The event supported three charities connected with the fire and rescue service, including the Fire Fighters Charity.

The Wiltshire and Dorset firefighters also visited US fire stations, attended memorial events and met crews from across the United States before returning home.
