A lecture by Sara Radice looking at landscapes and artists’ interventions with the wild. She will examine man’s physical and spiritual encounters with Nature and explore art in connection with time and place; how artists think about the elements – earth, wind, fire and water – and their role in both forming the earth beneath our feet and these works of art. Artists will include Constable, Turner, Moore, Nash and Ravilious, as well as contemporary artists such as Long, Parker and Gillespie. The works may be of specific places, but the essential subject often lies elsewhere. They have become, in Geoffrey Grigson words, ‘places of the mind’.
