A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault that prompted a major police response in Salisbury.
Officers were called to an address in Firsdown at around 4.45pm yesterday (May 5) after reports that a woman in her 50s had been seriously assaulted by a man known to her.
She was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
The suspect left the scene, sparking extensive searches across the city involving officers and the police helicopter.
The operation led to heightened police activity in areas including Spire View and Bishopdown, with residents reporting a visible presence of officers throughout the evening.
At approximately 10.40pm, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
He has been taken to custody in Melksham for questioning.

Detective Inspector Eirin Martin said: “We appreciate the significant concern this incident caused, with a heightened police presence across the city whilst searches of an address were carried out, as well as searches to locate the man.
“Please be reassured that this was an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public and we have arrested a man in connection with it.
“Thank you to the Salisbury community for their patience whilst we carried out our enquiries. There will be a continued police presence in the areas of Spire View and Bishopdown whilst we continue with our enquiries.”
Police have confirmed enquiries are ongoing.
