Police warning over increase in rogue trader activity in Salisbury

RESIDENTS are being warned of an “increase in activity” by rogue traders in and around Salisbury.

Wiltshire Police has urged households to be on their guard against doorstep callers using high-pressure tactics when selling.

A spokesperson said: “Rogue traders are uninvited doorstep callers that use high-pressure tactics to sell substandard, incomplete, or completely unnecessary home maintenance work (such as roofing, gardening, and driveway repairs).

“In particular, they target elderly and vulnerable members of the community. We are therefore asking everyone to be vigilant when it comes to cold callers and to please keep an eye out for your more vulnerable neighbours.”

Wiltshire Council Trading Standards issued advice for households to avoid falling victim to rogue traders:

  • Never engage: Do not open the door or talk to uninvited cold callers offering home, roof, or garden maintenance.
  • Check credentials: Look for verified professionals through the Buy With Confidence scheme endorsed by Trading Standards.
  • Get quotes: Always obtain at least three written quotes before agreeing to any property repairs.
  • Avoid cash payments: Never pay upfront or in cash; use a credit card or bank transfer to keep financial protection.
