Roof of Durrington house destroyed by fire

THE roof of a house in Durrington has been destroyed by fire.

Fire crews were called to the property, in Hackthorne Road, at just after 5pm on Saturday evening (April 12), amid reports of a blaze in a thatched roof.

The A345 and Church Street in the area were closed as crews from Amesbury, Marlborough, Warminster, Mere, Shaftesbury, Trowbridge, Verwood, a water carrier from Wilton, a command unit from Devizes and an aerial ladder platform from Salisbury battled the flames.

“On arrival, they found a well-developed fire affecting the roof and first floor of the property,” a Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“Firefighters used multiple hose reel jets, main lines and an aerial ladder platform to extinguish.”

Relief crews were later brought in overnight from Trowbridge, Wilton, Westbury, Swindon, Westbourne and Ludgershall.

At around 12.45am on Sunday morning, the response was scaled back to one crew and an aerial ladder platform to continue dampening down.

No casualties were reported and crews left the scene at around 9.30am on Sunday morning.

“The cause is believed to be accidental and likely to have started in or around the fireplace,” the spokesperson added.
