A PILOT booking system for six Wiltshire recycling centres – including Salisbury – is set to go live in less than two weeks time.
Wiltshire Council says demand at its Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) has caused “operational challenges across the network” and hopes the trial run of a new booking system will help to “reduce queuing, improve customer experience and operational efficiency and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses.”
From September 8, residents will be able to go online to book a visit to the HRCs included in the pilot, ahead of the launch of the appointment-only system on September 14.
The HRCs taking part in the booking system trial are:
- Devizes
- Lower Compton (near Calne)
- Melksham
- Purton
- Salisbury
- Stanton St Quintin (Chippenham)

As part of the pilot, residents will initially be able to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments also available. The council said it would regularly review slot lengths and site capacity throughout the pilot to “ensure the service meets demand while maintaining efficient site operations.”
The booking system is designed to make visits more convenient by helping to manage demand and reduce waiting times, particularly during busier periods. This will also allow site staff more time to help residents during their visit.
The introduction of the pilot will not affect opening hours, vehicle permit requirements or the types of waste accepted at the sites.
Residents are encouraged to use the online booking system wherever possible, however, anyone unable to access or use the online service will be able to contact Wiltshire Council’s Customer Services team for assistance in making a booking.
Councillor Paul Sample JP, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, said: “We’re introducing this pilot to help make visits to our recycling centres as smooth and convenient as possible for residents. Booking systems are already used successfully by many councils, and this pilot will help us understand how the approach works in Wiltshire and what benefits it can bring.
“Over the coming weeks, we’ll be providing residents with information about how the system will work and how to make a booking. I would encourage anyone who uses these six sites to familiarise themselves with the new arrangements ahead of September, so they can plan future visits with confidence.”
