Special Silver Salisbury day offers a range of activities for older people

A FESTIVAL for older people is returning to Salisbury this month.

The Silver Salisbury Festival runs from September 21 until October 12, with a programme offering something for everyone.

Many activities and events are free, with others offered at a low cost, organisers said.

Copies can be picked up from city libraries, Five Rivers Leisure Centre, The Information Centre and Shopmobility, and is also available online at www.silversalisbury.co.uk.

The festival gets underway with the St Laurence Goose Fair, in Downton, on Saturday, September 21, and concludes with a musical afternoon with Sarah Collins on the piano at The Quaker Meeting House on Saturday, October 12.

The festival launch – and celebration day – will be at the Guildhall from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, September 25, with A Bit of a Song and a Dance Dance Six-O, Mule Packers Line Dancing, the Coffee Choir and the Navy Larks providing the entertainment.

Refreshments will be available for donations, provided by Soroptimists International Salisbury.

“Silver Salisbury’s annual day of celebration at the Guildhall wouldn’t be the same without the contribution of Kate Edgar and at least one of the choirs she directs,” a spokesperson said.

“The highlight of our day will be Kate’s Soundtrack of my Life, when Kate will be sharing stories of her life in art, accompanied by music that reflects her varied and fascinating career.

“There is no charge for this event but there will be a retiring collection for local charities, Downton 4 Family and Silver Salisbury.”

They added: “Some events need to be booked for and we are aware that some older people are not online or find booking events very difficult.”

To tackle the problem, someone from the Silver Salisbury team will be available to answer queries and to take bookings during September on
• Tuesday mornings from 10.30am to noon at the Community Café at the Baptist Church in Brown Street
• Tuesday afternoons from 2pm to 3pm at the Playhouse
• Friday mornings from 11am to 12.30pm at Salisbury Library

The annual directory brochure of groups and activities throughout the forthcoming 2024/5 year is also available, including 125 entries.
