Wiltshire Council completes first major phase of A3102 Safer Road Scheme

A MAJOR series of road improvements in Wiltshire have been completed – with more to come.

Wiltshire Council said the first part of the almost £7 million A3102 Safer Road Scheme is finished, with work completed on the junction of the A3102 Calne bypass and Stanier Road.

Funded by the Department for Transport through the Safer Roads Fund, the scheme aims to improve the route between J16 of the M4 and Melksham.

The council said the programme was developed after the A3102 was identified as having a high number of fatal and serious collisions.

Further major improvements are planned in the coming weeks and months, including at the A3102/A342 junctions at Bromham, with work on this site due to begin in October, with completion set for December.

Work will include a new island junction to make the right turn safer for A3102 traffic, some widening of the carriageway, a formalised pedestrian crossing, and improvements to the A3102 approach.

A third large site, at the A3102/A342 southern junction, which will start early next year, which will include a new roundabout, improved safety to the right-turn lane for traffic into the A3102, the removal of the non-standard right turn island, and a speed limit reduction to 50mph.

A3102 upgrades

Elsewhere along the route, improvements include upgraded road markings and signage, junction enhancements, pedestrian and cycle crossing enhancements, visibility improvements through vegetation clearance, shared-use paths, and other targeted safety measures at locations identified through detailed road safety analysis.

David Bullock, director of assets, highways and transport at the council, said: “The completion of the first major phase of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme is an important milestone in our ongoing work to improve road safety across Wiltshire.

“The improvements at the Calne bypass and Stanier Road junction, alongside the wider measures being introduced along the route, are designed to reduce the risk of serious collisions and make journeys safer for everyone who uses the A3102.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to Vision Zero and our ambition to create safer roads and stronger communities, supporting the priorities in Our Wiltshire Plan to create safer journeys and maintain a high-quality road network.”

Chris Tidman, M Group operations manager, added: “The A3102 project at Stanier Road was a complex one that was successful because of the collaboration and interaction of all the parties involved – client, designers, supply chain and ourselves.

“We understand the challenges large projects like these bring including the disruption to the public, and where possible try to minimise these impacts. I would like to thank all those working on the ground for their efforts in completing the project, which should bring a much safer junction to this stretch of the network.”
