Wiltshire’s first Switch Together heat pump scheme now open

AS summer draws to a close, it won’t be long until we’re reaching for the thermostat once again, and for those considering a more eco-friendly way of heating their homes this winter Wiltshire Council believes it may have the answer.

A new group-buying scheme, offering access to government grants, competitive prices and pre-vetted installers, means people considering installing a heat pump could get one much cheaper than they might imagine.

Wiltshire homeowners can now register for Switch Together Heat Pumps – the first heat pump round in the county – building on five years of the annual Switch Together Solar scheme, which received more than 3,000 registrations in Wiltshire in 2026.

Eligible households can receive £7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, while eligible homes not connected to the gas grid and replacing oil or LPG heating, can receive £9,000.

Combining the grant with Switch Together’s group-buying savings, could bring the remaining installation cost down to around £4,843 and most homes will be able to benefit from both.

In 2021, it was found that around 13% of households across the county used heating oil, with the offer expected to be particularly relevant in rural parts of Wiltshire where homes are not connected to mains gas.

Councillor Paul Sample, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, said: “Replacing a heating system is a major decision, and residents need a straightforward way to understand the support available and what could work for their home.

“Switch Together brings together government grants, group-buying prices and pre-vetted installers. Residents can register for free, receive a personalised offer and then decide whether they want to go ahead.”

Wiltshire Council says helping residents access government funding and competitive prices for lower-carbon heating is one of the ways it is delivering ‘Our Wiltshire Plan’ priorities, including protecting the environment for future generations.

Cllr Sample added: “This is Wiltshire’s first heat pump round, building on five years of the annual solar scheme and extending group-buying to residents considering a different way to heat their homes.”

Wiltshire residents can register for free and receive a personalised offer for their home with no obligation to go ahead with the installation. Pre-vetted installers bid for the work through the scheme, which helps to secure competitive prices.
