POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was seriously assaulted while walking home in Larkhill late on Saturday night.

The incident happened at around 11.25pm on June 27 in The Packway, between the garrison church and the Packhorse pub.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was reportedly followed by a man before being assaulted.

She managed to escape and flagged down a passing member of the public, who took her home.

The incident was then reported to police.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s.

A 39-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the incident and was taken into police custody for questioning.

Officers are urging anyone who was in the area or witnessed anything suspicious around the time of the assault to come forward.
