Call for community voices as town council vacancy announced

RESIDENTS in Wilton are being encouraged to step forward and help shape the future of the town after a vacancy arose on Wilton Town Council.

The council has confirmed there is an open seat for a town councillor, offering people a chance to get directly involved in decisions that affect their community.

The vacancy follows the resignation of Amy Flanagan and triggers a formal process that could lead either to a by-election or the appointment of a new councillor by the council itself.

Under electoral rules, a by-election will be held if at least ten registered electors from the Wilton parish submit a written request to the Returning Officer at Wiltshire Council within the statutory time.

If that threshold is met, residents will head to the polls to choose who fills the vacant seat.

If fewer than ten requests are received, the vacancy will instead be filled by co-option.

This means Wilton Town Council will select a new councillor, typically following an application and interview process, to serve the remainder of the term.

Town councils play a key role in representing local voices, influencing planning matters, supporting community projects and working with wider authorities on issues affecting residents’ day-to-day lives.

The deadline for applicants is January 7. Anyone interested in standing for the role or wanting more information about the process is encouraged to contact the Wilton Town Council office.

Further details can be obtained by calling 01722 742093 or emailing clerk@wiltontowncouncil.gov.uk

The council says the vacancy is an opportunity for residents who care about Wilton to have a direct say in its future.
