THE man known as the godfather of punk poetry, Dr John Cooper Clarke, is coming to Salisbury City Hall later this month.

The event, entitled Edge Street Live in Association with SNG Live presents Dr John Cooper Clarke, kicks off from 8pm to 10pm on October 24.

Dr John Cooper Clarke’s influence spans generations, with his work “I Wanna Be Yours” not only being the worlds most popular wedding poem, but also used as a hit record by the Arctic Monkeys.

Organisers said the event provides an opportunity to see “a living legend at the top of his game”.

The literary phenomenon, a cult hero, first shot to prominence in the 1970s as he captivated audiences with his unique poetry and delivery style.

He clawed his way up from working men’s clubs and cabaret venues in his native Salford and Manchester, to become one of the most prolific figures in punk.

John’s early live shows were renowned occasions, and headline gigs were supported by many soon-to-be superstars including Joy Division, New Order and Duran Duran, as well as playing as special guest on shows by the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and The Clash.

Earlier this year, John became the first poet to headline an arena at Co-op Live in Manchester.

Organisers said: “John’s live show is a chance to see one of the world’s most important and entertaining spoken word artists at his bold and brilliant best.”

John’s best selling poetry collection, WHAT, was released in paperback on February 13.
