SALISBURY Cathedral has announced the appointment of Alfred R J Hawkins as its new archaeologist, bringing a wealth of experience from some of the country’s most significant historic sites.
Alfred will act as a specialist consultant, managing and protecting the cathedral’s historic fabric and the wider Cathedral Close, ensuring change and conservation go hand in hand.
His career spans the commercial archaeology and heritage sectors where he has worked as an archaeological researcher, field archaeologist and, later, a historic buildings specialist.
Alfred currently serves as curator of historic buildings at HM Tower of London for Historic Royal Palaces advising on major development projects, a role he will continue alongside his new position in Salisbury.
He is also cathedral archaeologist at Portsmouth Cathedral, giving him extensive experience of working within complex and nationally important ecclesiastical settings.
His areas of expertise include archaeological best practice, human remains, building conservation and ecclesiastical law, with a particular interest in cathedrals and royal peculiars – historic churches that sit outside the diocesan system.
He is also well known as a writer and broadcaster, with television appearances including BBC2’s Digging for Britain, Channel 5’s Inside the Tower of London and the Discovery Channel’s Unearthed.
Alfred said: “I am honoured and excited to have been appointed as Salisbury’s new Cathedral Archaeologist. It is a great privilege to be able to play a role in the continued care of this exceptional historic site and place of worship.”
The Dean of Salisbury, the Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, added: “Salisbury Cathedral is committed to the expert care of all its built heritage. Alfred’s work with us will be vital to this endeavour.”
