A SUPPORTING living charity in Salisbury is backing calls for local authorities to boost access to housing for people with disabilities and prevent homelessness.

This comes after a report by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman suggests those with disabilities are facing huge barriers to getting the support they need.

That includes inadequate care assessments, a lack of adaptations, and poor communication. The Ombudsman is asking councils to improve the ‘disproportionate challenges’ for disabled people with housing needs.

An Alabaré spokesperson said: “We feel it’s hugely important to make sure people with learning disabilities are given choice and support to live as independently as possible.

“We’d encourage local authorities to ensure their care provision is tailored to the needs of those who require housing support, with care and compassion shown for the various challenges faced by anyone at risk of homelessness.”
