Complete 40 miles in 40 days and help fight homelessness

HOMELESSNESS charity ALABARÉ is calling on supporters to get walking this spring to nurture their own wellbeing and help those in need.

The charity’s Walk for Lent initiative encourages people to cover 40 miles in 40 days – starting Ash Wednesday on February 18 and finishing by Easter Sunday on April 5.

A stroll to the shops, taking the dog out or a power-walk around the park can all count towards the total.

Registration is free, with donations and sponsorships welcomed towards ALABARÉ’s mission to break the cycle of homelessness.

ALABARÉ says walking is recommended by the NHS as a simple way to build stamina, boost heart health, burn excess calories and improve mental wellbeing.

It also provides an opportunity to embrace nature, meet others for connection and socialisation and provide spiritual enrichment.

The charity’s Boots on the Ground wellbeing programme includes many walking activities to improve fitness, lift spirits and reduce loneliness.

More than two-thirds of participants – 67% – say they feel more positive after taking part in walks.

The Walk for Lent challenge will boost funds for safe accommodation and specialist mental health support to help people rebuild confidence and stability.

Throughout 2026, the charity is highlighting the links between mental health difficulties and homelessness.

ALABARÉ senior chaplain Gill Turner-Callis said: “This time of the year is all about reflection and self-discipline, remembering Jesus’ time in the wilderness and the sacrifices made.

“Walk for Lent is a powerful way of living those values of compassion and generosity, alongside the long-term personal benefits of taking time for yourself, and your physical and mental health.

“We’d love to see lots of people getting out and about to support us and our mission to break the cycle of homelessness, just by putting one foot in front of the other.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part and will be covering the miles on dog walks each evening after work.”

People are encouraged to share their journey on social media during the challenge using the hashtag #WalkforLent, with participants able to buy memento t-shirts.
