FLOODING near a new housing development in Salisbury was caused by an unfinished drainage system overwhelmed during Storm Chandra, developers say.
Residents and councillors have reported flooding concerns around the construction area on Netherhampton Road following last week’s rainfall.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Vistry confirmed that an attenuation basin – designed to temporarily hold excess rainwater – had overflowed.
The company said the overall drainage network for the site is still being built and is being delivered in phases.
“Following the exceptional rainfall from Storm Chandra, we are aware of surface water near our site on Netherhampton Road and are in contact with Wiltshire Council,” the spokesperson said.
“As the drainage system is being delivered in phases, an attenuation basin temporarily overflowed during the storm.
“We are arranging for gullies in the area to be cleared and expect the first phase surface water system to be completed in the coming weeks, which will help reduce future risk.”
Vistry added that clearing drainage gullies is now a priority as the company works with the council to prevent similar issues during further heavy rainfall.
Storm Chandra brought widespread travel disruption and flooding across the county, with forecasters describing the rainfall as among the heaviest seen this winter.
