SALISBURY Women’s Refuge (SWR) could shut immediately after 150 years of helping families escape domestic abuse due to a critical funding void.
The service provides a vital lifeline for women and children nationwide, but this month announced it faces imminent closure unless £20,000 can be secured.
The refuge has so far raised just over £7,500 through online fundraising.
SWR began life as an orphanage and now provides secure accommodation for up to 12 women or families at a time. In recent years, the facility has operated at about 90% average occupancy.
The refuge is staffed by a dedicated and hard-working team of eight and supported by volunteers.

They deliver comprehensive, specialist support including one-to-one guidance, the nationally recognised Freedom Programme, counselling, play therapy, help with court proceedings, housing and preparation for moving on to independent living.
The refuge says it has successfully operated independently without dedicated domestic abuse funding for three years, receiving only basic housing benefit as a landlord.
SWR chair of trustees Caroline Probert said: “From its origins in the 1800s to the present day, this refuge has relied on the compassion and commitment of individuals who believe in protecting those who have nowhere else to turn.
“We are now asking our community once again to stand with us. Without urgent donations, we cannot continue to offer safety, hope, and a path to independence.
“Donations of any size will directly support the ongoing operation of the refuge.”

Last week, SWR was among three local causes supported by Tesco Amesbury where store community champion Laura Allies was on hand to collect much-needed toys in time for Christmas.
