Drivers stopped as police focus on safety near schools and playgrounds

POLICE have been out on the streets of Larkhill and Bulford this week with a clear message for drivers to slow down, especially where families live, walk and play.

Speed checks were carried out on Monday (December 30) by PC McColm from the Salisbury Response Team, focusing on roads close to residential housing, schools and playgrounds – areas where pedestrian safety is particularly critical.

During the operation, officers stopped multiple vehicles to speak directly with drivers about their speed and driving standards.

Speeding was highlighted as one of the so-called ‘Fatal Five’ causes of serious and deadly collisions, alongside drink and drug driving, mobile phone use, not wearing seatbelts and careless driving.

The festive period brings added risks on the roads with more people travelling, visiting friends and family and spending time outdoors.

Police warn that excessive speed dramatically reduces reaction times and increases the severity of collisions, meaning even small increases over the limit can have devastating consequences.

As a result of the checks, one driver was issued with a ticket after being recorded travelling at 39mph in a 30mph zone.

A further six drivers were spoken to and given educational advice about their speed and manner of driving.

PC McColm also spent time engaging with members of the community, including talking to children about road safety.

Wiltshire Police say this combination of enforcement, education and engagement is key to keeping communities safe, particularly in areas where vulnerable road users are most at risk.

Officers are reminding all motorists that speed limits are there for a reason, and that sticking to them can quite literally save lives.

Their advice is simple – be safe, drive smart and always watch your speed.
