Flood advice sites unveiled as counties face weeks of high water

TWO new websites offering advice, information and support on flooding incidents have been launched across Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.

The Dorset and Wiltshire Groundwater Incident Response 2026 website brings together Environment Agency resources to explain the complexities of groundwater flooding, how residents can stay safe and what steps they can take to prepare for prolonged high water levels.

It also provides details on how to sign up for the specialist flood‑warning service that monitors rising groundwater.

The service offers a longer lead‑in time than conventional alerts, allowing communities more time to protect homes and property.

Meanwhile, with the major incident in Somerset now stood down, the Somerset Flooding 2026 website will support the recovery phase, providing updates on ongoing operational work and outlining the next steps for affected areas.

According to the Environment Agency, a “conveyor belt” of heavy rain through January and February has affected counties in different ways.

Dorset and Wiltshire, which sit largely above chalk aquifers, are experiencing their worst groundwater flooding since 2014.

Somerset has also faced extensive flooding, with water levels on the Levels and Moors only now beginning to recede after reaching heights not seen since 2014.

Both situations are expected to continue for several weeks.

Ian Withers, of the Environment Agency, said: “The work is far from over in these counties, which are still living with the pressure of flood risk and elevated water levels.

“We continue to respond, to warn and inform and to engage with the communities.

“These webpages will keep awareness alive, and everyone informed.”

The agency said both websites will remain in place for as long as necessary and can be reinstated quickly in future flooding events if required.
