Fresh weather warnings for Wiltshire as Storm Bert approaches

PEOPLE in Wiltshire are being urged to prepare for bad weather as Storm Bert approaches this weekend.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings covering much of the south west, running from 6am on Saturday until 11.45pm on Sunday for heavy rain, and from 3pm on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday for strong winds.

“South or south-westerly gales, locally severe gales are likely to affect many southern counties of England from Saturday afternoon until Sunday night,” a forecaster said.

“The strongest gusts will be along coasts with gusts 60-70mph possible around exposed headlands, while elsewhere gusts of 50-60mph are possible, even for some inland locations.

“The strong winds will start to ease across the southwest on Sunday morning, but may take until evening before easing across the far south-east.”

The Met Office has warned people to check properties for loose items outside their homes, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

Meanwhile, people are also being urged to check and plan ahead of making journeys by road or public transport – as well as potential power cuts.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary,” a Met Office spokesperson said.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.

“Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

The warnings come after much of the south west was hit by snow earlier this week, after further warnings from the Met Office.
