The following letter was sent in response to an article that revealed Wiltshire Council’s audit of the kerb at the Fisherton Street junction in the city did not raise any concerns.
Since that article was published, the council has now revealed that bollards will be installed at the corner of the footpath alongside “further deterrent paving” to help make it easier for drivers to navigate the turn.
I CAN’T be the only local (coming up to 50 years) to be perplexed after reading this article?
Surely all the expert investigators seem to have totally ignored the problem caused by huge vehicles from Churchfields Trading Estate, travelling past the railway station then left under the bridge.
The illustration clearly shows the sharp left turn. Apart from mounting the now enlarged footpath, these huge vehicles have also collided with the new railings on the other side footpath into Fisherton Street.
I have recently also seen a large lorry stuck under this bridge going towards Fisherton Street from South Western Road, which, together with a couple of police vehicles behind it, did “not much” for traffic flow both ways.
Is it not possible to divert these HGVs? I must say I do sympathize with the wonderfully frequent bus drivers who navigate both ways every hour of every day for us “retired” folk.
May I squeeze in a request again (over the years) for some amazing art work under this damp disgusting dirty underpass?
There are many much admired art works in the city itself plus the first originals by artist (Fred Frieber I think) who adorned the Milford Street underpass with several local historical scenes. Great job too!

Can I just say two words here …. Brunel Link
Ummmm…. What way out of churchfields would be any better for a HGV ? I can’t think of one.
They are diverted already… up Exeter street ,left into New Street, past the cathedral entrance and over Crane bridge.
The absurdity is that Churchfield estate was designed for access from the Harnam Netherhampton Road and across a bridge to Brunel Road. ‘The Brunel link ‘ . This was stopped because the NIMBYs said that building that access would encourage house building along the it and the Netherhampton Road. Now where are they building ?
