THERE are major tailbacks on the A303 near Chicklade this morning following a crash involving two HGVs.
The A303 is closed eastbound between the B3081 near Bourton and the A350 near Chicklade due to the collision.
Wiltshire Police confirmed the incident, which happened near the Somerset-Wiltshire border, at 7.36am.
At 7.42am, the force said nobody had been seriously injured. Officers have not made any arrests.
An eyewitness who passed the scene said one of the vehicles involved was a lorry carrying hay, which had crashed and was blocking both carriageways near Willoughby Hedge services.
The AA is reporting slow traffic and long delays in the area as drivers are diverted away from the closed section of the A303, between Wincanton and Chicklade
Police remain in attendance and are urging drivers to find alternative routes to avoid congestion in the area.
A spokesperson said: “Please be aware of closures in place following a road traffic collision involving two HGVs on the A303 at Chicklade.
“Traffic is being diverted from the B3095 at Mere. There are no reported serious injuries or arrests.
“Drivers should consider alternative routes and expect delays in the area.”
National Highways has advised motorists to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs. The recommended route is:
- Leave the A303 at Leigh Common and travel eastbound on the B3081.
- Follow the B3081 for approximately nine miles to the A350, then rejoin the A303 eastbound.
