Man jailed for strangling pub worker in Salisbury

A MAN has been jailed for 12 months after grabbing a member of staff at a Salisbury pub by the throat.

Salisbury Crown Court heard that David Strain, 53, attacked staff at The Bridge Tap in Fisherton Street on October 23 last year.

Pub employees had attempted to remove Strain from the premises due to his behaviour.

During the incident, Strain, of Ashley Avenue, Belfast, grabbed a staff member around the throat. He also assaulted others who tried to intervene.

Police arrested him shortly afterwards. Officers said he was abusive during the arrest and had to be restrained.

Strain later pleaded guilty to assault by beating and intentional strangulation.

PC Mat Jacob said: “We take violence against anyone, whether members of the public or staff working at licensed premises extremely seriously.

“It will never be tolerated.

“Our team of officers is committed to acting quickly and decisively to protect our communities and ensure offenders are held accountable.”

Strain was sentenced to 12 months in custody. He has also been banned from The Bridge Tap for two years and ordered to pay a £187 surcharge.

Police said the case demonstrates that violence against hospitality staff will be dealt with robustly.
