New Canon Treasurer is “excellent addition” to cathedral, says Dean

SALISBURY Cathedral has appointed a new Canon Treasurer with the responsibility for maintaining the building and preserving its ‘treasures’.

The Revd Neil Traynor will be installed in the role, previously held by the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullally, at Evensong on April 27, by the Bishop of Salisbury, The Right Revd Stephen Lake.

Neil joins from the Holland Park Benefice in London where he has been associate vicar of St John the Baptist – the fastest growing church in the Kensington area, with a reputation for championing music and a flourishing arts programme.

Neil was ordained at Wakefield Cathedral where he held several positions before moving to the parish of Witney in the diocese of Oxford and then to the diocese of London.

In recent years, the role of Canon Treasurer at Salisbury has expanded to encompass sustainability, and Neil will be one of three residentiary canons, each responsible for different aspects of cathedral life.

Neil said he is “delighted and excited” to join Salisbury Cathedral.

He added: “Salisbury is a very special place, not just for residents but for people around the world and being part of those conserving and developing the cathedral for future generations is a huge privilege.

“My daughter, Harriet, and I are looking forward to becoming part of the wonderful community.

“I very much look forward to working with the Dean and my clergy colleagues and the wider team, particularly Clerk of Works, Gary Price, and everyone in the Works Department.”

Dean of Salisbury The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos said the Treasurer has a “pivotal role”.

“Neil will oversee our care of our unique built heritage,” added the Dean. “He will add to our experience of it through the thoughtful introduction of artworks.

“He will lead our determined efforts to reduce our carbon consumption. And – most importantly – he will be a colleague in prayer and worship in this holy place.

“Neil is an entrepreneurial priest who has had a remarkable ministry in London. He is an excellent addition to the team, and we look forward to welcoming him and Harriet.”
