Police and Trading Standards step in to tackle doorstep crime

TRADING Standards and Amesbury Police have visited homes to offer advice on how to avoid becoming victims of doorstep crime.

Officers and trading standards staff called on residents in Kitchener Road earlier this week to raise awareness of rogue traders and cold callers.

Police say rogue traders often claim urgent repairs are needed to roofs, guttering or gardens.

Others may offer “free loft insulation surveys” which can lead to unnecessary and costly work.

Residents are being urged not to engage with cold callers and to be alert to unexpected work taking place at neighbouring properties.

Any suspicious activity should be reported.

Officials are also encouraging people to use the Buy With Confidence scheme to find Trading Standards approved businesses.

Anyone who receives a cold call or has concerns about suspicious behaviour is advised to contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 or call police on 101.

Amesbury Police said community vigilance is key to preventing crime and helping protect vulnerable residents.

Free “No Cold Callers” door stickers are also available by contacting the local policing team.
