Preferred school places secured for most Wiltshire pupils

ALMOST all Wiltshire families have secured one of their preferred secondary schools for September, with new figures showing 98.34% were offered one of their top three choices.

Of those, 93.85% received their first preference as children prepare to make the move from primary to secondary school in 2026.

Wiltshire Council said there were slightly fewer applications than in 2025, as the year group transferring this September is smaller.

Most parents embraced the online system with 99% of applications submitted digitally.

Families who applied online will receive confirmation of their offer either by email or through the Parent Portal, ssees depending on their chosen method of contact.

Those who submitted a paper application before the October 31, 2025, deadline will be sent a letter on March 2.

The council has stressed this is the date letters are posted, not when they will arrive.

Parents and carers have until March 16, 2026, to accept or decline their child’s place.

Cabinet member for children’s services, education and skills Cllr Jon Hubbard said: “It’s that time of year again when families across Wiltshire are waiting to hear about their secondary school places, and I’m pleased that so many have received offers that reflect their preferences.

“I encourage families to take time to read through their offer carefully and follow the next steps outlined, whether that’s accepting the place or seeking further guidance. Our admissions team is on hand to support anyone who has questions.

“These positive figures are the result of the careful planning and commitment shown by our officers, helping to secure sufficient school places now and in the future.

“I wish all pupils and their families the very best as they prepare for this important and exciting move from primary to secondary school.”

Parents who have not received an offer at one of their preferred schools have the right to an independent appeal.

Details of how to appeal are available on the council’s website or directly from the relevant school.
