Refill shop saved more than two tonnes of plastic from landfill

A COMMUNITY refill shop in Fordingbridge has gone from strength to strength since it first opened in 2022.

The Green Gram is an award-winning refill shop that is committed to making eco-friendly products accessible to all.

In 2024 alone, the shop saved more than 93,000 containers and more than two tonnes of plastic from landfill.

The shop offers a wide range of sustainable goods—from pantry staples to cleaning and bathroom essentials.

The Green Gram also has deep roots in the community, engaging people of all ages and ability through school holiday activity packs, work experience placements, volunteering opportunities, and inclusive events.

Their initiatives are designed to be welcoming and accessible, especially for those on low incomes.

Described as a “hub for those on their own” and a “bright point in the day,” the shop plays a vital role in reducing isolation and fostering connection.

Local groups like Mens Sheds (who helped fit the shop), the village church, and an art club (which designed their logo) have all contributed to its success.

Southern Co-Op recently visited the shop to highlight the impact of its partnership with Plunkett UK in promoting sustainable and inclusive community businesses.

“We are grateful to Southern Co-op for their continued support,” said partnership manager at Plunkett UK, Hannah Barrett.

“Multi-year partnerships ensure that groups like The Green Gram can be consistently supported by Plunkett from idea through to successfully trading.”

Rebecca Longyear, community lead at Southern Co-op, said: “The Green Gram is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when community, sustainability and co-operation come together.

“We’re proud to support Plunkett in nurturing businesses like this – places that not only reduce environmental impact but also bring people together and create real social value.”
