Salisbury Cathedral lit up in red for VE Day 80

A RED glow can be seen covering Salisbury Cathedral at night this week as a tribute to the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).

The cathedral will form as a focal point today (May 8) at 12pm as two minutes of silence will be observed by visitors and staff.

Today marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War, with celebrations and ceremonies taking place across the country.

The cathedral will be lit up until tomorrow (May 9).

A spokesperson said: “The cathedral will act as a point of reflection and remembrance for those who lost their lives during the Second World War, as well as a renewed commitment to peace, echoing the spirit of unity that defined the end of the Second World War in Europe.”

They added: “As the Channel Islands were liberated on May 9 and are connected to the Salisbury Diocese, a special evensong will take place at the Cathedral on Friday (May 9), including appropriate music and readings, including Parry’s anthem My Soul there is a Country. All are welcome.”
