Salisbury Racecourse: preview and tips for Thursday’s six-race card

IT’S the second day of Salisbury Racecourse’s Summer Holiday Racing meeting, and today’s six-race card consists of three handicaps, one maiden and two novice races.

Read on for a full preview of and tips from the Salisbury card, courtesy of Racing TV, who provide all of the latest free bet offers.

Up first is an apprentice handicap over seven furlongs (2.20pm).

My Boy Jack was unlucky when beaten by just a neck last time out at Thirsk over six furlongs, and the step back up in trip might make the difference today as he remains on the same mark.

Amathus won over course and distance last time out and hasn’t been too heavily penalised as a result, so he looks in with another chance of winning.

Next is a two-year-old fillies’ maiden over seven furlongs (2.50pm). Five of the nine contenders are newcomers, of which the likes of Sogniamo and Valkyrie Storm should be worth considering based on their quality pedigrees.

Box Clever improved on her debut for a decent third of nine last time out and, if taking another step forward, could be the winner for Jonathan Portman and Rob Hornby.

Race three is a seven-furlong novice (3.25pm). Jimmy Fox’s Maybella is the only debutante among the field of nine, and it’s easy to look elsewhere.

Clive Cox’s Aspull is the only runner with a win under his belt already, having won on debut over course and distance.

He should have little reason not to win again, but he might have to watch out for Slipper Time, who has shown some ability in the face of greenness and – if settling better this time – could break his maiden.

A two-year-old fillies’ novice over a mile follows (4pm). Three of the six runners are making their first racecourse appearances: Mariotto, Pintara and Wild Rosie.

On paper, this ought to be a high-quality contest, due to the star-studded pedigrees and lofty price tags seen here.

George Boughey’s Radiance won her debut at Yarmouth very impressively, and she’s likely to be at the sharp end once again, but may find this a harder task up against potentially better rivals.

Brighlee has the most experience and race fitness, but found the heavy ground when last seen at Goodwood testing. She might be a revelation on this firmer going, though.

The penultimate race is a mile and a half fillies’ handicap (4.35pm). Emma Lavelle’s Chilli Queen comes here on the back of a hat-trick, and is now 12 pounds higher in the handicap than she was at the beginning of the season.

She ought to be capable of a top-three finish. Finishing just under two lengths behind her last time was Willie Haggas’ Orionis, who could win this from the same mark today under the guidance of Tom Marquand.

Finally, a three-year-olds’ handicap run over a mile and two furlongs rounds off the afternoon’s racing.

There are only five runners here, but it looks a reasonably tight contest nonetheless (5.10pm). Yellow Card should have a chance on his stable debut for Mickey Bowen, having won at this track for Ollie Sangster, but Made U Blush also should run a good race under Rob Hornby on her debut for Jonathan Portman, which is also her first run in the UK.
