Salisbury Racecourse: preview and tips for Wednesday’s six-race card including the Listed Stonehenge Stakes

THE first of two consecutive days of racing this week at Salisbury Racecourse arrives tomorrow (August 13) with a six-race offering, including the Listed Stonehenge Stakes.

Wednesday’s card kicks off at 2.30pm with a class four novice stakes over six furlongs before coming to a close at 5pm as seven runners take on the one-mile and one-furlong handicap.

Up first sees 11 runners head to the start for the six-furlong novice stakes in class four (2.30pm) as the two-year-olds take centre stage.

Crown Of Light looks like the one to beat in the opener, a big 28/1 winner over course and distance 21 days ago off the back of a low-key debut when eighth.

He’s under a penalty here but is still a force to be reckoned with for trainer William Knight and has the eye-catching booking of William Buick as jockey on Wednesday.

Seven runners will tackle the mile handicap in class five to mark the second race on the Salisbury card (3pm) and preference here heads the way of Flag Carrier for trainer Brian Toomey, a creditable second last time out after four months off, and is just 1lb higher in the weights now and is a very likely player to go one better with jockey Hector Crouch piloting.

Gladiora rates the next best in this one, decisively taking a four-runner contest at Bath 12 days ago, but this race is a bit more competitive than that one so will have to improve a bit to get the win.

Race three of the afternoon is the feature contest of the day (3.30pm), the Listed Stonehenge Stakes worth a handy £22,684 to the winner.

It’s a very small field of three set to line up for the mile contest and none of the trio can be dismissed from picking up the top prize.

A Bit of Spirit, trained by Clive Cox, could be the way and should be proved suited by the mile trip when bagging a pair of novices and stepping up to seven furlongs to finish second in a Listed contest at Ascot last time out.

Morris Dancer can fill the second spot, a short head second at Goodwood on his last spin while Mystic Moment will fill out third, a winner of an Epsom maiden in July and a good fifth in a Listed contest at Sandown last time out.

The Pembroke Novice Stakes comes next at 4pm and five runners will head to the start for the six-furlong trip.

The Jamie Osborne-trained Palio Di Siena is the selection; a runner up twice in maiden and novice contests before failing to see it out when eight on handicap debut at Wolverhampton but dropping down to a sprint trip, should find this distance and contest suitable.

Azaniya arrives at Salisbury on a hat-trick and can take the step up in class in his stride for trainer Owen Burrows in the penultimate race of Wednesday’s meeting (4.30pm) off the back of wins at Newmarket and Windsor in the Listed Upavon Stakes.

Revoir is certainly the main danger here for the Ralph Beckett yard, not seen to best effect at York last time out but had a close call at Newbury prior to that.

Finally, the meeting comes to a close at 5pm as a field of seven take on the one-mile and a furlong handicap in class six.

Preference in the finale heads the way of Offiah’s Boy, who bagged a third win of the campaign when winning at Bath 12 days ago and is only 3lb higher in the weights for that success so should back it up and strike for the fourth time this season.
