Forecasters warned people to expect ‘ice and some snow leading to difficult travel conditions in places’.

They said people could expect:

* Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

* Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

* Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

A forecaster said things could turn wintry overnight in many parts.

“Turning cloudier overnight with light rain developing at times, turning increasingly wintry, and falling as snow over hills,” they said.

Temperatures would drop to around 2C, they added, before more potential snow and sleet on Tuesday.

“Rather cloudy on Tuesday with rain and sleet at times, perhaps some snow, especially over hills,” they said.

“Turning brighter in the afternoon.”
