Spate of rogue traders prompts police warning

POLICE have issued a warning to residents in and around Amesbury following a rise in reports of rogue traders operating in rural communities.

Police say they have received several reports in recent weeks, particularly in Newton Tony, Shrewton and Winterbourne Dauntsey, of traders calling at homes offering services.

Officers are urging residents to remain vigilant, regardless of where they live.

The warning follows incidents reported by the community, including one resident who said a trader climbed onto his roof after being told no, and another who reported a group knocking on doors along London Road offering gutter clearing and roof cleaning, with members of the community taking to social media to share concerns and experiences.

Advice includes keeping doors and windows locked even when at home, not engaging with doorstep traders and remembering that legitimate businesses will not pressure householders into making quick decisions.

Any suspicious behaviour should be reported to police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.

Residents are also being encouraged to share the warning with neighbours, friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

Anyone who would like a “no cold calling” sticker for their door can request one by emailing the neighbourhood policing team at AmesburyAreaNPT@wiltshire.police.uk.
