AMESBURY Town Band has announced the appointment of its first ever patron after forming more than 150 years ago.
Members unanimously voted to welcome mayor Cllr Dr Monica Devendran into the new role, formalising what has already been several years of dedicated support for the historic brass band.
Cllr Devendran has long been a keen advocate and fundraiser for the band, and members say they are delighted to strengthen the relationship.
A spokesperson for the band said: “Monica has for several years been a great supporter and fundraiser for the band and, by a unanimous vote, we are pleased to welcome her into a more formal relationship with us.
“We value her enthusiasm, public relations experience and her contacts with the local community and beyond. We look forward to working with her.”
For more than 150 years, Amesbury Town Band has played a central role in the town’s cultural and community life, performing at civic events, concerts and local celebrations.
Speaking after her appointment, Cllr Devendran said: “My sincere thanks to the committee and members of the Amesbury Town Band for electing me as their first patron.
“For over 150 years, the band has been an integral part of Amesbury’s cultural and community life. I look forward to supporting its continued success and contribution to Amesbury.”
The band is keen to welcome new or returning brass players to its ranks. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday at 7.30pm at the Nicolson Centre, Boscombe Down, SP4 0JE.
