Traffic chaos in Salisbury as drivers discover Devizes Road is closed – and lorry stuck

A ROAD closure is causing traffic chaos in Salisbury – after a lorry got stuck.

The closure, in Devizes Road, has left many motorists using Ashley Road and Meadow Road to avoid the closure.

However, for one large lorry, Meadow Road was not large enough and it got stuck as it attempted to get through, causing long delays.

It is understood the road closure is due to work to replace a manhole in Devizes Road, with the Wiltshire Council roadworks map detailing temporary traffic lights in place.

Drivers on the route said they were unaware of the closure until the reached the traffic.

“It’s chaos on Devizes Road,” said one driver, who did not wish to be named. “There’s an unannounced road closure that’s forcing lorries down Ashley Road.

“One tried to get along Meadow Road and is now stuck, others are having to turn around.

“Dozens of cars were held up behind the stuck lorry.

“There don’t seem to be any signs warning of the road closure until you get to it.”

The lorry driver who has got stuck in Meadow Road said: “I was trying to get up the A360 and I just came to the road closure.

“There were no signs warning me, I just had to turn right and tried to get back to the roundabout.

“It’s ridiculous and I feel bad because all these cars are stuck behind me – but it’s not my fault.”

Paul Wilson, who lives in Meadow Road, said: “I’m supposed to be at work early this morning but my van is stuck fast.

“The problem is, a lot of people park on double yellows overnight because there aren’t enough parking spaces and that’s what’s jammed the truck in.

“You can’t really blame the lorry driver, but this is going to disrupt a lot of people’s mornings.”
