Traffic lights at Salisbury station as improvement works continue

TRAFFIC lights will be installed in a busy Salisbury street next week as a new pedestrian crossing in installed.

The work, in Churchfields Road, is part of the redevelopment of areas surrounding Salisbury Train Station.

The lights will initially be on the north side of the road, and will enable the route to become one lane from Monday (November 11) until November 15. They will then return between 8am and 4pm between November 18 and 22.

Traffic management is needed, Wiltshire Council said, as the work will “require amendments to the kerb line on both sides of the road in the vicinity of the rear pedestrian entrance to Salisbury Railway Station”. “Work will take place in two phases, with the traffic being reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals,” a spokesperson added.

During the second phase, on the south side of the road, the traffic management will be in place between November 25 and 29 constantly, and from 8am to 4pm between December 2 and 6.

During both phases the lights will be removed at weekends.

The work is part of the on-going Station Forecourt scheme, which the council said aims to produce a “more attractive, and welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike”.

Cllr Tamara Reay, cabinet member for transport, said: “As part of our business plan, we’re committed to ensuring residents live in well-connected communities. A key feature of the Station Forecourt scheme is making the station more accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience or delays caused by these works and the traffic management, but it is essential to ensure the safety of the teams working to create the new zebra crossing.

“We would like to thank in particular the residents of Churchfields Road for their patience and continued co-operation in delivering this important scheme for Salisbury.”
