Trapped six-month-old calf rescued from pipe

A SIX-month old Aberdeen Angus calf was saved by firefighters after it got stuck in a culvert at the weekend.

Culverts are used to funnel water flow under obstructions, and an unfortunate calf found itself stuck 15 meters into a pipe at a farm in Lockersley near Romsey on Saturday (July 26).

Animal rescue firefighters from Winchester and Redbridge sprang into action and arrived on the scene at 9am.

The culvert was around 60 metres in length, with a diameter of just half a metre.

Crews located the animal, cleared the ground and used a specialist disc cutter to access inside.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “A local vet was then able to sedate the calf before animal rescue equipment was used to lift the calf out of the pipe.

“The crews left the scene and returned to the station at around 2pm after the animal was handed back into the care of the farmers.”
