AMESBURY Town Football Club is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Peter “Pete” Taylor, who passed away on January 2.
The club announced the news on Facebook, describing Pete as a “local football legend” whose dedication to the club spanned decades.
Pete made a record 493 appearances for Amesbury Town FC, scoring eight goals, before taking on numerous roles off the pitch, including manager, chairman, committee member and ultimately club president.
His influence on the club was profound, shaping both its competitive and community spirit.
Tributes from former teammates, colleagues and supporters poured in following the announcement.
Derek Graham described Pete as “a great stalwart of Amesbury” whose “dedication to the club was truly inspiring”.
Former players such as David Coker shared personal memories, stating: “Growing up in Amesbury and meeting Pete at Amesbury Football Club transformed not just mine but many of our lives. It was a privilege knowing him as a player, manager and most importantly, as a person.”
Colin Newbury highlighted Pete’s mentorship, recalling how he helped young players transition from boys’ football to senior teams and contributed to a senior cup-winning squad in 1984.
Pete’s daughter Emma thanked the club for its outpouring of respect and affection, describing the recreation ground as her father’s “second home”, and recalling that he was happiest either playing, supporting or shouting at the referee on TV.
Supporters remembered Pete as a “friendly man always with a smile”, a “true gent”, and “Mr Amesbury Town” whose commitment to the club was unquestionable.
Many noted his readiness to help others, whether on the pitch or off it, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him.
Amesbury Town FC will hold a minute’s silence before their next game to honour Pete’s memory.
His family has said all will be welcome at the funeral once arrangements are confirmed.
Peter Taylor leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, mentorship and community spirit that will continue to inspire Amesbury Town FC and its supporters for years to come.
